HOW TO GET STARTED ON YOUR FITNESS JOURNEY

If your job isn’t a Personal Trainer or fitness instructor, the chances are that you have to plan exercise into your life outside of school/college/work etc.  I’ve spoken to many of you who aim to make it the first thing you do before you start your day and get it ‘out the way’, but I’ve also spoken to some of you who really don’t know where to start when it comes to making sure you keep your body moving and it inspired me to write this post to help you out a little bit.  Read on for some tips on how you can kickstart your fitness journey.

So, you’ve found the motivation. You’ve got some great new activewear that you want to sweat in. Now what? Do you do classes, home workouts or get a personal trainer and buy a pack of 10 sessions without knowing if you’ll like it?! Let me help you a little.

GOALS

I think it’s important to know why you want to move your body?  Are you working towards a goal? Weight loss? Increased flexibility? Or just to be more active because you know it’s good for your body both inside and out?  Write these things down and once you know why you want to exercise it will help you figure out what’s best for you.

ACCESSIBILITY

We don’t all have fancy gyms or fitness studios near us where we can go and workout or take classes so this is something else to take into account.  I’ve read countless messages from people who say ‘I don’t work out because I don’t have a gym near me’. This might be true, but it also looks like an excuse!  As someone who creates home workouts for a living I can assure you that there are plenty of ways to exercise without leaving your bedroom let alone your home!

COST

How much do you want to spend on exercising? If you can budget for at least 1 class per week then find a class that you want to invest in and give it a go.  If you’re more of a ‘I’ll only exercise if I can do it for free’ kinda person then websites and/or YouTube is the way forward for you.  With millions of free videos available, money really doesn’t have to be a factor when starting your fitness journey.

PLAN & TRACK

This step is vital at the start of being more active.  We all have a lot going on in life, so scheduling in workouts is the only way to be certain you’ll get your exercise fix.  If you wait until you ‘can be bothered’ to workout, there’s a high chance it wont ever happen.  Write down at the start of the week when you plan on moving and grooving and stick to those plans in the same way you would stick to a dentist appointment or dinner date with your friends.  The more you get used to doing this, the more it will become a standard part of your life and before you know it you’re exercising regularly doing the workouts you know you enjoy and what you benefit from without even having to overthink it or waste money unnecessarily.

READY, SET, GO!

OK, so you know what your goals are, you know where you can exercise and also how much you want to spend on it.  Now all you have to do is get started. My honest opinion?  I would start with some videos at home, try some beginner workouts like this and gradually work towards something more challenging like this.
