I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve been “called out” when talking about body positivity and self love.  As if being in “good shape” removes your right to talk about body positivity and body confidence.  Reality check: changing the way you look doesn’t necessarily change how you feel.  Self love doesn’t have a size, it comes in all different shapes, sizes and styles – and that’s both beautiful and OK.  The bottom line? Chasing aesthetics will never leave you satisfied.

I think we have this perception that if you love your body, then you can’t strive to want to improve it.  But the way I look at it, it’s the opposite. If you love something, you look after it, you listen to it, you want the best for it.  Being ‘better’ doesn’t have to be quantified in looks, it also equals growth, development, self improvement and ultimately self worth.

I don’t think that striving to change your body necessarily means that you don’t love it, but it all comes down to the motivation.  The goal to change needs to be rooted in a place of love rather than hate.  Not looking in the mirror and hating what you see, so punishing it with hours of exercise and restrictive diets, but looking in the mirror and loving what you see.  Maybe not liking it right now, but loving it enough that you want it to be its best – and you’re willing to take the right steps to try and do that.

In reality, healthy doesn’t have a shape or size.  It isn’t a weight or a measurement.  It looks different on everyone.  Having a goal that’s solely focused around changing the way you look, is a deluded way of believing you’re going to change how you feel because you suddenly fit into a size 8 pair of jeans.  It doesn’t work like that – and in truth, it’s the direct opposite.  ‘Work on your mind and your body will follow’ is probably what I believe to be one of the most undervalued statements in the Health & Fitness industry.  Mindset really is everything.

You might look at those who you look up to on Instagram and think it’s easy for them to talk about confidence when they look ‘like that’ – but that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Chances are, they have the same insecurities as you, they’re working on themselves just like you and they’re trying to figure out this whole self love thing, just like you.

Work out because you’ll feel damn good if you do, not because you’ll feel bad if you don’t.  Anybody, of any shape, of any size, can preach about self love and body positivity.
